The CBC's Passionate Eye is premiering a new documentary on Monday night (October 5) called It's a Teen World: wired for sex, lies, and power trips. For podcast and radio listeners, there's 3 hours of recording on CBC's Ideas program for the same project.

I've only seen the doc trailer and heard the 1st hour of the recording, but I'm getting 'wired' for more -- and perhaps you should too.

One of the central themes so far is the amount of pressure guys and girls are under for being sexual.  For girls this mostly means attracting attention (by the way you look) and for guys this means giving attention (by the way you act). Rap music takes the focus of the pop culture pimp-and-ho performances, with celebrity sex tapes and reality tv shows also getting a mention.

The program is told through the voices of teens themselves. These open and honest conversations tell us about violence, body image, role playing, feminism, media literacy, media saturation, sex education, fear, homophobia, peer groups, and teen identity. Ready for any amount of post-doc fallout, the producers have prepared quizes, behind the scenes extras, and resources for parents and educators.

I'm hoping the programs can give us a little more insight into masculinity and the complicated and negotiated lives of young men. So far, the material is pretty clear about the double standards and levels of victimization and self-loathing young women face in this teen-world, but I'm left wondering what's going on for the guys.

Let's stay tuned, find out, discuss, and act.

on some levels this documentary was a little sensationalist as most media coverage of teens and sex is. however, the investigation into the role of technology in their lives and how this adds to the confusion of identity formation and increases social pressure was profound. even more significant is the absolute lack of media voices to counter the overt sexualization of teens in the media. where are the voices that preach the values of friendship, compassion and caring?

i sent a letter home to the parents for the kids to watch the doc with their parents. few gave it to them - they are are so afraid to talk about sex at home. only one kid actually watched the whole thing. and while we dialogue about this a lot in my leadership class these kids really are adrift on their own in this topic for the most part as they have very few places to talk seriously and get informed on sex. their silence crushes them.

it's a sad state of affairs when everyone in society appears to tolerate sexism & feminism is being sold by the Pussycat Dolls. It's like feminism never happened at all.

I caught part of this last night and was quite intrigued. The stories these kids are telling are far more real than they should ever be. I remember being in high school and witnessing certian things along these lines, but it has progressed to a dangerous level where people have become de-sensitized, to a point where this behaviour is status-quo. It's scary. I can't imagine a parent watching that program and getting up the next morning watching a daughter or son walk to the school bus. Are we a product of our environment, or do we produce the environment that in turn molds us? Unfortunately there's always a finger pointing for blame, but something does have to change.

Hey Paul - I think this is a great topic to touch on and I'm hoping the doc on CBC will be insightful.

Would love to hear your opinion on it after it airs! Maybe another article discussing the content?

Have a great one =)
